Famous Apes Set to Become First NFT Supergroup
Universal Music Group (UMG) is capitalising on two of the year’s biggest trends: NFTs and the metaverse, with the creation of a new ‘NFT Supergroup.’ The international music cooperation is collaborating with collector Jimmy McNelis to create the band Kingship out of four of his ape NFTs. McNelis, an early Ethereum buyer, purchased hundreds of ape NFTs from the inventor of the Bored Ape Yacht Club, who granted anyone who purchased one of the apes complete commercial rights to use the image.
Later, McNelis was approached by Universal’s 10:22PM record label, a “next-gen Web3 label” created by former Sony executive Celine Joshua. Joshua suggested the idea of starting a new band to the label before signing the’metaverse group.’ She chose four characters she thought would make a fantastic band. 10:22PM with a team of crypto artists and animators, the two-dimensional apes are being transformed into three-dimensional beings.
One of the band’s members, the golden ape, is now valued almost $300,000 USD. According to McNelis, his collection is worth more than $100 million. The band will play and participate in video games, virtual-reality applications, and across the metaverse, which is a collection of digital experiences, as well as record music for Kingship, which will be released on streaming services.
The storylines for these individuals will be built from the ground up by Joshua and her crew. They’ll devise a marketing strategy to introduce the apes to potential fans, explain how they met, and characterise them. She told Bloomberg, “It’s the same way we expose new talent around the world.”
Gorillaz, an English virtual band founded in 1998 by musician Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett, has spawned a slew of ape-themed virtual bands.
Timbaland, a music producer from the United States, is cashing in on the fad by forming Ape-In Productions, which will create a music group based on characters from the Bored Ape Yacht Club. Timbaland’s band, TheZoo, will release their first single, ‘ApeSh!t,’ on Wednesday, according to Variety. Lincoln Aperaham and Safari Ferrari are among the six Bored Ape characters featured.
